| Mel's Mentors: The Rev. and Mrs. J.R. Goodwin were affectionately referred to as, "Brother and Sister Goodwin," or "Mom and Dad Goodwin," by those who knew them. The Goodwins had learned from Smith Wigglesworth, Howard Carter, Stanley Frodsham and from other early Pentecostals. In turn, they poured their knowledge and anointing into others. Their most well-known protege', Kenneth Hagin Sr., came across their path in 1938. The Goodwins began teaching him about spiritual gifts and prophetic ministry. Another well-known minister who developed under the Goodwins' oversight was John Osteen--Joel Osteen's father. Brother Osteen was filled with the Spirit in the Goodwin's living room and preached his first Charismatic sermons from their pulpit. Brother and Sister Goodwin also spoke into the lives and ministries of Marilyn Hickey, Billye Brim, Elizabeth Pruitt-Sloan, and many others. Lastly, Mom Goodwin spoke into Mel Montgomery's life also, laying her hands on him, and asking God to use Mel in spiritual gifts. In response, the Lord poured out the prophet's anointing onto Mel. Brother Mel has written, with the cooperation of the Goodwin, Hagin, and Osteen families, a biography of Mom and Dad Goodwin entitled, "The Genuine Flow."
The Goodwins were well known for five things:
Preaching--Their sermons were biblical, solid, sound, and balanced. No gimmicks. No hype.
Anointing--What they prophesied always came to pass. They flowed in all nine gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Order--They kept everything within scriptural boundaries.
Impartation--Numerous solid prophetic ministries developed under the Goodwins.
Purity--They were ministers of the highest integrity.
