World-wide distribution of our monthly e-mail newsletter
Mel's Mentors:
The Rev. and Mrs. J.R. Goodwin were affectionetley referred to as, "Brother and Sister Goodwin," or "Mom and Dad Goodwin," by those who knew them. The Goodwins had learned from Smith Wigglesworth, Howard Carter, Stanley Frodsham and from other early Pentecostals. In turn, they poured their knowledge and anointing into others. Their most well-known protege', Kenneth Hagin Sr., came across their paths in 1938. The Goodwins began teaching him about spiritual gifts and prophetic ministry. Another well-known minister who developed under the Goodwins' oversight was John Osteen--Joel Osteen's father. Brother Osteen was filled with the Spirit in the Goodwin's living room and preached his first Charismatic sermons from their pulpit. Brother and Sister Goodwin also spoke into the lives and ministries of Oral Roberts, Marilyn Hickey, Billye Brim, Elizabeth Pruitt-Sloan, and many others. Lastly, Mom Goodwin spoke into Mel Montgomery's life also, laying her hands on him, and asking God to use Mel in spiritual gifts. In response, the Lord poured out the prophet's anointing onto Mel.
The Goodwins were well known for five things:
Preaching--Their sermons were biblical, solid, sound, and balanced. No gimmicks. No hype. No greedy appeals for money, money, money.
Anointing--What they prophesied always came to pass. They flowed in all nine gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Order--They kept everything within scriptural boundaries. Occult spirits and weird experiences were not allowed to take over their services.
Impartation--They drew their entire congregation into the anointing of God. Hundreds of believers developed into giving messages in tongues, interpretations, and other spiritual gifts through attending their church. Numerous solid prophetic ministries were birthed out of their church.
Purity--They never preached false doctrine, stayed married to each other, and were never involved in misconduct of any kind. These were ministers of the highest integrity.

The Prophecy: In 1989, when this picture was taken, Sister Goodwin prophesied to a young Brother Mel concerning his ministry calling, saying: Mel honey, many are called [to be used in spiritual gifts], but few are chosen. You are chosen [to be used by the Lord in spiritual gifts], I know this. And I have known this ever since I first met you. Why do you think I have spent so much time with you? I don't spend this much time with everyone who contacts me. I have spent this much time with you because I knew that God was going to give you an anointed ministry, and you needed to know the things I could teach you so that you wouldn't mess yourself up. Now, I couldn't tell you this when I first met you because you would have been lifted up in pride, but I can tell you now: You are going to have a strong ministry, an anointed ministry, like some of the men of old. This will happen for you, Mel . . . Now what 'men of old' means, I don't know, but you will know when it happens."
Sister Goodwin laid her hands on Mel and prayed for God to use him in spiritual gifts. This was the last time Mel saw her alive.
Parts of this prayer and word of prophecy began to come to pass only a few weeks later. The Lord poured out the prophet's anointing on Mel, and began using him in giving messages in tongues, interpretations, prophecies, and other spiritual gifts. In 2006, the rest of the word about having a ministry "like some o f the men of old" began to come to pass. People from around the world began sending Mel rare early Pentecostal recordings by the "men of old" who had pioneered the Pentecostal movement. Most of these recordings had never been released to the public or copied before being given to Mel. As Brother Mel listened to their sermons, his ministry message and sermons began to change to reflect the Pentecostal message of F. F. Bosworth, the Goodiwns, and others. You can listen to these recordings on this website, by download, for free. |

Most of what we are currently teaching in Charismaitc circles concerning spiritual warfare is scripturally unsustainable and frankly does not work. These gimmicks only distract us from engaging in the highest form of spiritual warfare as practiced by Christ and Paul. What the Wicked do not realize, and we have not noticed, is that right now their personalities and mindsets are changing to conform to the eventual acceptance of the coming Anti-Christ. On a subconscious level, the Wicked are preparing to receive and welcome their Lord—the Anti-Christ. He shares those truths with you in: "Preparing to Welcome the Anti-Christ" By Rev. Mel C. Falling Not Falling A Balanced Understanding Dr. Charles Goodwin and Rev. Mel C. Montgomery ........................................................................................... |
Rev. Mel Montgomery, a Charismatic minister, and Dr. Charles Goodwin, a professor of New Testament Greek, examine the spiritual manifestation called "Falling in the Spirit." Evangelicals, did you know that Falling in the Spirit has been common in nearly every major revival of the last 300 years? Charismatics, did you also know that the old revivalists of the 1700s and 1800s viewed this experience much differently than we do today? The facts will surprise Evangelicals and Charismatics alike. Gil Howard Browne Subject: Mel and Gil discuss principles involved in ministering in the power of God. They share ministry experiences and observations, and Gil relates a remarkable insight the Lord gave him into Satan’s present limited condition. The Lord provides a message in tongues and interpretation during the closing comments at the very end of the podcast.
January 8 Title: "Behold, I Make All Things New!" Guest: Rev. Gil Howard Browne Subject: Revelation21:5 reads, “And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new . . .” Mel and Gil speak with great frankness about their own lives and ministries, and how God tookthem at their lowest point in ministry, back unto Himself, gave them a new joy, and how you can be revived also. They discuss how certain ministry claims, ego, the showmanship have worn very thin in Charismatic circles. They tell how to minister to people in the greatest power possible. The podcast ends with Gil praying for those who listen to this podcast to find refreshing in God. If you are burned-out, or just seeking more of God, we urge you to listen to this podcast, apply the principles Gil and Mel share, and come into agreement with the prayer Gil offers for you.
January 9 Holy Spirit Meeting Cancelled Due to Bad Weather January 15 Title: "My Life: From Aimee Semple McPherson to Kenneth Hagin Guest: Rev. Elizabeth Pruitt-Sloan Subject: In this podcast, Rev. Elizabeth Pruitt-Sloan tells of her childhood in Aimee Semple McPherson’s church, and being prophesied over by Sister Aimee. Elizabeth also relates the account of being healed as a child in one of Jack Coe’s tent meetings, and observing a man being healed of cancer of the tongue. She tells of the revivals she has witnessed, and discusses her life up 1956 in which she saw Kenneth Hagin minister for the first time. Podcast Length: approximately 30 minutes.
January 22 Title: "My Life: From Kenneth Hagin to Now" Guest: Rev. Elizabeth Pruitt-Sloan Subject: Sister Elizabeth discusses moves of God of the 1950s and 1960s in which she participated. She and Mel note the similarities between Aimee Semple McPherson’s Bible School and Rhema. They also bring out consistent characteristics that they see between Stanley Frodsham, David Du Plessis, Howard Carter, Kenneth Hagin and the Goodwins. Mel makes the point that one of the characteristics of genuine spiritual ministry is the desire to allow more seasoned ministers to speak into your life. They also touch on the vital role of the pastor in keeping individual ministers, and the local church as a whole, on track. Mel gives an example of situations a prophet might not discern, but that a pastor would see through in a minute. In the course of the discussion, the Holy Spirit also inspires a message in tongues and interpretation.
January 29 Title: "H.I.M.: I Heard a Sound From Heaven" Guest: Rev. Elizabeth Pruitt-Sloan Subject: In this recording, Sister Elizabeth discusses with Brother Mel how the idea came to her to found Helping Inspire Ministers (H.I.M.). As she describes it, she “heard a sound from Heaven,” inspiring her to found a ministry credentialing and fellowship association. Her organization has grown over the years, and has experienced increased growth in recent years. She shares ministry lessons she learned from Brother Hagin which guide her now in knowing which applicants to ordain, license, or to receive as members. Sister Elizabeth also discusses in passing, people who have a “religious spirit,” and how such people can grieve the Holy Spirit in a service. Mel relates an account of witnessing Sister Elizabeth stop one of her Holy Spirit services when people started to pull it off in the wrong direction. Mel also discusses the unique qualities he has noticed about Sister Elizabeth’s Holy Spirit meetings, and the help he has found in being a member of H.I.M. | | ............................................................................................................................ |

Excerpt: "In addition to the Pentecostal Outpouring, the Healing Revival, the Charismatic Renewal, and other moves of God and revivals of the previous century, there were two major prophetic streams released from Heaven. One prophetic move that became well known began with William Branham in the 1940s. However, that prophetic stream was actually preceded by a much less well-known prophetic outpouring of equal or greater intensity that originated with the Rev. and Mrs. J.R. Goodwin starting in the 1930s."

Regarding: Getting into the Genuine Flow of the Holy Spirit:
Brother Mel's compilation of and respectful additions to the spiritual teachings of the couple he knew tenderly as "Dad and Mom Goodwin" are valuable additions to the Pentecostal testimony to life and ministry in the power of the Holy Spirit. Mel's recounting of their close relationship with Kenneth Hagin Sr. and John Osteen, along with their briefer encounters with Howard Carter and Smith Wigglesworth, fills in important detail in the flowering of the mid-20th-century Pentecostal movement and the preparation of some leaders, such as the Goodwins, for its modulation into the Charismatic renewal of the last half of the 20th century. What Montgomery has preserved in this book, as well as at his information-rich web site, informs and inspires and should stimulate further investigation of manifestations of the Holy Spirit that embody God's saving reign today. Mark E. Roberts, Ph.D. Director
Holy Spirit Research Center Oral Roberts University Tulsa, OK

Rev. Howard and Ruth Carter "The Goodwins' church was one of only two I ever saw in my life that had all nine of the gifts of the Spirit in full manifestation. . . It is a great joy to be in a meeting where the power of God comes down. Where there's liberty. Where the Lord can have His way. This is a wonderful church. I could wish that all the churches that we minister in had such freedom in the Spirit as you enjoy here."

Rev. Kenneth E. Hagin For the first 40 years of my ministry, whenever I had a major vision or revelation from the Lord, I would not fully teach it or preach it publicly until I had shared the matter with the Goodwins and asked them to judge it and correct me if they thought I needed it. Thinking about the Goodwins always brings a very warm feeling to our hearts, as they were a tremendous blessing to me and my wife through the years. They were a great example of how the Holy Spirit will manifest Himself in an orderly fashion through obedient vessels. The Goodwins had the most Spirit-filled church, and the most decent and orderly church I had ever seen in my life.

Dr. Billye Brim Billye Brim Ministries It was my privilege to know the Goodwins rather closely. . . The demonstration of tongues and interpretation through them is still the highest I have ever seen.
Dr. Ed Dufresne Ed Dufresne Ministries Throughout my 45 years of ministry I have been stirred and inspired by the many stories of supernatural manifestations and spiritual happenings that occurred through this remarkable couple, Dad & Mom Goodwin. . . The spiritual example this couple left for us won’t allow us to be satisfied with anything less than living and ministering in the power of the Spirit.
Dr. Charles Goodwin Original Word Ministries I honestly think this book is a partial fulfillment of the prophecy given to my parents so many years ago by Kenneth Hagin Sr.
Rev. Pat Harrison Faith Christian Fellowship Buddy and I caught the anointing that was on Momma and Poppa when they laid hands on us. We began to flow in the gift of tongues and interpretation. . . Along with my parents [Kenneth and Oretha Hagin], Momma and Poppa Goodwin showed me the infinite value of an intimate relationship with the Lord. I am eternally grateful to God for putting such precious and special people in my life.
Rev. Marilyn Hickey Marilyn Hickey Ministries Rev. Goodwin brought outstanding messages and they touched everyone’s lives. With the Goodwin’s you certainly felt the anointing of God and were encouraged to go deeper in the things of the Spirit.

Dr. Larry Huggins The Commonwealth of Christ I can say this first hand, having seen the Goodwins minister outside of their church many times, it makes what passes today as spiritual ministry seem medieval. The Goodwins were highly skilled, master-surgeons in the operating theatre of the Spirit.
Rev. Joe Jordan Joe Jordan Conferences The Goodwins' deeply impacted my life and ministry. I was mentored by them for 10 years and it shaped my ministry entirely. By their teaching and world-class example, I learned how to minister in the gifts of the Spirit and that has been the backbone of my ministry for 46 years.

Mrs. Dodie Osteen Lakewood Church We went to church with the Goodwins when our children were small. We loved it. They were our good friends and tremendous pastors. They helped us to know how to follow the Spirit of God.
Rev. Elizabeth Pruitt-Sloan Helping Inspire Ministries After Papa Goodwin went Home to be with the Lord, I had the opportunity to get to know Mom Goodwin in a special way. She invited me to come over and visit and have a meal with her when she lived in Broken Arrow, OK. She had some input into my ministry calling and guided me with her wisdom. ................................................................................ | |
