In Charismatic and Word of Faith Circles, we are overlooking a treasure.

We are so convinced that we know all there is to know about speaking in tongues, that the whole subject has become ho-hum to us. This is a mistake.

God has invested enormous power and anointing in the Gifts of Speaking in Tongues and in the Interpretation of Tongues. And He always intended that these two gifts in particular, would be a doorway into greater manifestations of His Holy Spirit.

I did not know that there was so much power in Tongues and Interpretation until I met Sister Goodwin. You can read articles about the Goodwins' ministry on this site by clicking on the following link (HERE).

This mighty woman of God had ministered with Wigglesworth, and had taught truths to Kenneth Hagin Sr. about the Gifts of the Spirit and the prophet's ministry. And I was sitting in her livingroom as the Presence of God grew thick, and numerous Gifts of the Spirit flowed through her prolifically. I sat there transfixed as we prayed and fellowshipped together, and God manifested Himself so powerfully.

Aaaaah...Was I ever really that young and green?

And I began to learn.

I began to see.

I began to understand.

In Sister Goodwin's house, I saw the Gift of Speaking in Tongues and the Gift of the Interpretation of Tongus in their full manifestation. That's when I realized: we have taken these two gifts for granted. We have thought we knew all there is to know about them. But in fact, we have not tapped into even 10% of their potential.

Eventually, Sister Goodwin laid her hands on me, and those two gifts and others began to flow through me. They started out small, and almost insignificant in manifestation, but steadily grew stronger and stronger. Then the Word of Knowledge began to operate, and the Word of Wisdom. Then after some more time, the power gifts began to operate simultaneously with the speaking in tongues and interpreting.

I've seen tremendous manifestations of God's power come as I spoke out in tongues and interpreted. I've seen people healed, with no one laying hands on them as I have spoken and interpreted. I've also seen miracles. In my experience, the greater manifestations of the Holy Spirit began with Tongues, and then Tongues lead into other gifts.

But the Gift of Tongues (in public assembly) is almost unknown in our circles anymore.

Oh I know, dear reader, you'll probably disagree with me. You'll say, "We have it in our church."

No, you probably don't.

Let me tell you what you probably have. This is very common. You probably have people who feel a little inspiration so they stand up in a service and simply speak out real loud in their prayer language. That is not a message in tongues. Then someone else will stand up and speak the first thought that pops into their heads. That is not the interpretation of tongues.

True manifestations of these Gifts are riveting.

They are powerful.

They absolutely stop everything that is going on, and arrest your attention completely.

No two messages are ever closely alike. And they are deeply, deeply, moving and inspiring.

You know without a shadow of a doubt that you have just had an experience with God Himself, and that you have just heard from the Throne. Something changes on the inside of you when a genuine message in tongues comes forth, because such messages are containers of God's anointing and glory.

When it is someone speaking in their prayer language, and someone mistakenly trying to "interpret" that, it is mostly just blank. Blank is the best description I can think of.

The "message" might contain some nice sounding words and some pleasant thoughts, but even as it is being spoken, your attention wanders. These kinds of messages all sound pretty much the same.

They will say things like:

"Oh My people, My people! Your praises today have ascended to me like the incense of the Temple of Old..."

Next week it will be like:

"Oh My people, My people, My people! [3 'My peoples' this time] Your prayers have ascended to me like the wings of angels...[prayers and angels' wings this week...ooooh!...cool!..]."

They may stir a little emotion, but they are not truly moving or inspiring. But as a result of these messages, nothing actually changes.

Week after week, basically the same people rattling off variations of the same messages, and no one is ever really transformed. And church doesn't change. It just stays in the same old rut. Deep down inside, you doubt the message--not because "the Devil is trying to rob you of it." You doubt it because you think, "Surely it should all amount to more than this!"

Genuine manifestations of Tongues and interpretation ARE much more than that!

There is a depth of the Spirit that is closely tied in with speaking in tongues, both the prayer language and the public gift. With this gift being reserved in the treasure rooms of Heaven throughout eternity and presented as a Gift to the Church of the Son of God, it is to be a significant part of our personal and public prayer and worship, and of our communications from God.
