Although few Spirit-filled Christians know it today, the Charismatic and Word of Faith movements owe much of their existence directly or indirectly to the ministry of Rev. and Mrs. J.R. Goodwin.
Known to those who loved them simply as “Brother and Sister Goodwin,” J.R. Goodwin and his wife were instrumental in reshaping modern Spirit-filled ministry.
Brother Goodwin was a seasoned and wise pastor and Sister Goodwin, his wife, was an outstanding prophet. Over the course of 50 years in ministry, they impacted the lives of Kenneth Hagin Sr., Kenneth Copeland, John Osteen, Oral Roberts, Marilyn Hickey, and Billye Brim among others.
Brother and Sister Goodwin were among the earliest teachers on the Gifts of the Holy Spirit in the 1930’s. They pastored numerous churches throughout mostly East Texas, eventually ending their ministry pastoring for 27 years in Pasadena, Texas.
The roster of ministers who crossed their paths, or whom the Goodwins influenced read like a Who’s Who of Pentecostal and Charismatic giants. Each story is a fascinating one, which I detail in individual posts.
